How to use the Roman Urdu converter

What makes this converter different
Most Roman Urdu converters replace letters one by one: a becomes ا, b becomes ب, and so on. That produces spellings no Urdu reader would accept, because Urdu writing does not follow English letters. Likho Urdu works in three layers.
- A dictionary first. Common words are looked up with their correct spelling, including the many ways people type them. bohat, bahut, bht and bohot all become بہت.
- English words in Urdu spelling. Pakistani Urdu is full of English: phone, update, online, password. These have settled Urdu spellings (فون، اپ ڈیٹ، آن لائن، پاس ورڈ) and the converter uses them.
- Sound rules for the rest. A new word is spelled from its sounds, with separate rules for Urdu and English words. You always see which words were guessed, so nothing wrong slips through unnoticed.

Tips for the best results
- Write the long vowels. paani and pani both work, but for rare words, doubling a long vowel (aa, ee, oo) helps the sound rules choose the right letter.
- Use the word picker for sound-alike letters. Urdu has several letters with the same sound: س ص ث, ز ذ ض ظ, ت ط and ہ ح. Only you know which word you mean, so when sahi should be صحیح (correct) rather than سہی, tap it and choose.
- Your choices are remembered. Once you pick a spelling, the converter uses it every time you type that word in this browser. Clear it any time with “Clear my saved spellings”.
- Full English sentences are recognised and written by sound (آئی ایم گوئنگ ٹو لاہور). To change the meaning into Urdu you need a translator; this tool converts script, not language.

What is Roman Urdu?

Is this the same as translation?
